Episode Title: A Relationship Will Not Save You

Podcast: Charlie’s Toolbox - Season 2

Host: Charlie Taylor

Episode Summary:

Welcome to Season 2 of Charlie’s Toolbox! This new season marks the end of one chapter and the exciting beginning of another. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of you who have supported me throughout this journey, especially over the past year. It’s been a challenging season, and I haven’t been able to release as many episodes as I would’ve liked. But your support has meant the world.

For this new season, we’re switching things up! Each episode will begin with a new mantra to set the tone. This season will be all about intention, growth, and reflection. Let’s kick off today's episode with a mantra.

Mantra of the Day:

“There is nothing about me that is wrong.

I have accepted this, allowing me to follow my inner voice.

I honor this voice and all its needs, and no one convinces me to ignore it.”

Episode Breakdown:

In today’s episode, we explore a common misconception: the idea that a romantic relationship can save you. I shared a story that highlights this pattern:

People often use romantic relationships as a way to give up power in their own lives. They grow tired of steering their own path, of showing up for themselves, and they come to resent their own autonomy. So, they find a partner to take over that responsibility, only to be devastated when they realize their partner is pursuing their own happiness, not the couple’s shared happiness or goals.

I recalled the story of a woman who left behind her well-established life to follow her boyfriend to Texas. He hadn’t asked her to, but she followed him regardless, sacrificing her life for a relationship. When the relationship ended abruptly, she was left to rebuild.

Key Takeaways:

  • People often abandon their autonomy, hoping a relationship will solve their problems or provide direction.

  • This pattern often stems from a belief that building a fulfilling life independently is too hard, leading to an over-reliance on romantic partners.

  • Your autonomy is precious and hard-earned, especially for women, given the long history of fighting for rights and independence.

  • Giving up your autonomy in a relationship can lead to disastrous results, leaving you questioning where your life went.

Call to Action:

Stop stepping back in your life and giving someone else the authority to dictate what’s best for you. Your autonomy is your power, and it’s your responsibility to cherish and protect it.

Final Thoughts:

I’ll leave you with this:

“You were once in the driver’s seat, but then you met a man and decided to sit in the passenger seat, letting him choose the direction and even use your resources to get there.” And now you wonder where your life went?
